Snow Guards to the Rescue

Category: Blog Post, Product Highlights

With the severe winter weather we’ve been experiencing on the East Coast, I wanted to outline our position on the installation of snow guards on EcoStar roof systems. EcoStar tiles have a much smoother surface than asphalt shingles and lend themselves to more frequent snow slides if snow guards are not properly installed. Although EcoStar recommends the use of snow guards in regions where snow accumulation is common, they are not required.

The purpose of snow guards is to hold all of the snow on the roof until it slowly melts off or falls in smaller pieces. A lack of snow guards greatly increases the likelihood of property damage due to snow fall from the roof. The proper amount and layout of the snow guards is dependent on many factors that include roof size and slope, distance from the eave to the ridge, and physical location of the property. Before being installed on an EcoStar roof, we recommend contacting the snow guard manufacturer to determine the required number of snow guards for the specific roof. If the number of snow guards installed is insufficient, or they are not installed per the recommended layout, they will not perform as intended. It is the responsibility of the contractor and building owner, not EcoStar, to determine both the required number and the layout of the snow guards. We receive numerous inquiries if snow guards can be installed on an existing EcoStar roof. The answer is yes! Snow guards with a flat sheet metal mounting flange work best. The Alpine #40(R) pad style snow guard is an excellent example of this type of snow guard. However, there are many manufacturers that offer similar snow guards.

As stated above, EcoStar can only recommend that these be installed and followed per specification. EcoStar will not be held liable for damage to property or persons. For additional information, please contact EcoStar Technical Services at 800-211-7170.
